Overview
The Polytechnic University of Milan (acronym Polimi [ 4 ] ) is an Italian scientific and technological university , founded in Milan in 1863 and is therefore the oldest university in Milan. The fields of study and research include the three areas of engineering , architecture and design .
According to the QS World University Rankings 2023, for the 'Engineering & Technology' teaching area, it proved to be the eighteenth university in the world. [ 5 ] It ranks 7th for Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering, 8th for Design, 12th for Civil and Structural Engineering, 18th for Electrical and Electronic Engineering and 10th for Architecture [ 5 ] , thus proving to be the first university in Italy in the faculties mentioned above. In 2025 it reached 98th place for the first time in the overall QS World University Rankings, confirming itself as the best positioned Italian university globally. Its alumni and professors include: Nobel Prize winner Giulio Natta , mathematician Bruno de Finetti , engineer Amalia Ercoli-Finzi , engineer and inventor Enrico Forlanini , railway engineer Carlo Perelli, writer Carlo Emilio Gadda and architects Renzo Piano and Aldo Rossi .
